Abstract

NDT techniques such as AE are required to evaluate and to predict the in-service behaviour of a real metal-metal bond, particularly at the manufacturing stage. Resonant and/or wide band sensors have been used to detect acoustical activity during the manufacture of 2024 T3 alloy joints. The heating, contact temperature and cooling down phases of polymerisation are easily distinguishable. Tests have also indicated that AE activity related to joints prepared according to best practice procedures was different from that related to joints presenting various levels of imperfection.
