Evaluation of stochastic crack propagation models
The efficiency of two widely used fracture mechanics formulae, the Paris and the hyperbolic sine crack growth rate laws, is investigated when each is randomised. The variability of the crack propagation phenomenon is either included in the free parameters of these laws (random variables), or it is consolidated to a new random process. The validity and consistency of these formulae in determining values of parameters from experimental results is examined, and their ability to predict reliably the fatigue life of a component is assessed.
