Tropical forest cover of South and Central America as derived from analyses of NOAA-AVHRR data
This report details the work carried out by the TREES project to produce a virtually-complete tropical forest inventory for most of South and Central America from NOAA-AVHRR satellite data. The work outlines the steps involved in acquiring and pre-processing imagery, the classification techniques employed and compares the final product with existing data sets. The resulting digital database (at 1 km resolution) forms the most recent, homogeneous and detailed database of the extent of tropical forest in Latin America to date, and thus forms a valuable basis for more detailed decision-making, monitoring, investigation, stratification and model-development by a whole range of potential users.
