Abstract

The computer package RELIEF has been made to ease the task of designing emergency pressure relief systems for batch-type reactors and storage vessels. The main areas of application are: (i) for the safety engineer, who has to ensure the correct functioning of relief systems; (ii) for the design engineer, who has to design new plant; (iii) for consequence analysis, where RELIEF can furnish a realistic time dependent source term for dispersion calculations; (iv) for education and training purposes. The manual gives an in-depth description of the functionality of the graphical user interface, and it explains to the user how to perform a calculation and use an output processing facility. The appendices are a reference source and give details of the files produced by RELIEF, the meaning of the error messages and the input variable specifications.
