Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The Province of Varese commissioned the Environmental Institute of the Joint Research Centre in Ispra to prepare a management and monitoring plan aimed at bringing under control the eutrophication of the Lake of Varese. This necessitates ascertaining the lake's trophic state at present, tracing the evolution of this state over the last twenty years, assessing the effectiveness of water treatment measures adopted to meet official restoration targets, and identifying possible direct measures to speed up the lake's recovery. The project will be completed in three stages. The research stage will consist of a limnological study of the lake together with a land use and planning study. The development stage will involve identification of the phosphorus residues from scattered point sources, and an assessment of the suitability of quantitative mathematical models in determining the relationship between pollutants and water quality. The proposal stage will comprise an assessment of the effectiveness of restoration measures being implemented as well as a review of possible direct measures to speed up the lake's recovery and a technical proposal setting forth projected beneficial effects on lake water quality.
