Application of innovative methods for phytoplankton analysis
Within the framework of the MITO project (Microphyte toxins) the European Commission has promoted a collaboration between five member states. This report summarises the results of one of the experimental exercises set up between the JRC, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche and Istituto Ricerche Pesca Marittimo of Ancona. The aims of the experimental campaign were to evaluate the performance of a new portable flow cytometer developed to analyse phytoplankton in terms of chlorophyll-autofluorescence and biomass determination, and to study the horizontal and vertical distribution of phytoplanktonic communities in relation to physical and chemical conditions of the water column.
