The aim of the project was to develop, construct and test a pilot inspection facility which, based on the eddy-current principle, can produce, on-line, an objective display of defects on hot strand surfaces with characteristic defect data. When testing the facility it was found that all the components meet the requirements as regards their service behaviour, yet differ greatly as regards their susceptibility to trouble and intensity of maintenance. The sensors and oscillation system operated almost troublefree; the descaling system and the marking device, in contrast, were very susceptible to trouble and maintenance-intensive. To increase the availability of the facility, some of the components still had to be improved and modified. The faults that otherwise arose could ultimately be reduced to a justifiable level by means of increased maintenance.
