This article highlights the main points and arguments that were presented at a workshop on the limits of automation in air traffic control and aviation on November 25-27 in Siena, Italy. The contributions address the main issues of automation from different perspectives: industry, research, field studies, psychology, engineering and sociology. This document summarises the views under two headings: the level of automation in air traffic control and the level of automation in flight decks.
