The FIRS (Forest Information from Remote Sensing) project was launched in 1994 by the Environmental Mapping and Modelling (EMAP) Unit of the Institute for Remote Sensing Applications (IRSA) at the Joint Research Centre, Ispra. The major objective of the project is to develop a forest information system for all of Europe. This will include both sectorial and environmental forest information. Where possible, remotely sensed data will be used as a primary source of information. The project has been divided into two main parts. The first part consists of three Foundation Actions and the second part of six Themes. Emphasis in 1994 has been placed on the Foundation Actions. This paper describes the results from Foundation Action 1 (regionalisation and stratification of European forest ecosystems), and preliminary work being carried out to use these results in the production of a 1:1,000,000 forest map of Europe.
