Abstract

Techniques for characterising the shear behaviour of fibre-reinforced composites are critically assessed and the types of behaviour generally observed are briefly described. These considerations are supported whenever possible by a comparison between the results obtained experimentally and those predicted from finite element analyses. Attempts to extend to ceramic matrix composites some of the approaches which have been used to characterise polymer matrix composites are discussed. New methods more suitable to ceramic composites are presented.
