Abstract

Remote sensing is a suitable source of information for agricultural statistics. Depending on the scale of application, the statistical approach takes account of different ways of mixing the satellite information with other sources. The examples examined are operational applications developed within the frame of the MARS project. The techniques described can reduce sensibly the cost of forecasts and estimates based on ground gathered data at provincial, regional, national and European level, thus maintaining an acceptable level of reliability. The scale limit is given by the error of measurement committed using satellite images and by the spatial density of meteorological data.
