Abstract

The KROTOS fuel coolant interaction (FCI) tests aim at providing benchmark data to examine the effect of fuel/coolant initial conditions and mixing on explosion energetics. Experiments were performed in controlled geometries that were comparable with the FARO large-scale tests. New HO(2)-ZrO(2) tests are reported, using 3 kg of prototypical core material. Four tests have been performed in the test section of 95mm in diameter with different subcooling levels (10-80 k), and one test has been performed with a test section of 200 mm in diameter and with an external trigger. The results from Al(2)O(3) tests under the same initial conditions are also presented for further confirmation of the observed difference in behaviour between Al(2)O(3) and UO(2)-ZrO(2) melts.
