Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The main objective of this conference was to provide an overview of the principle issues - ecological, physical, social, economic and cultural - which are collectively contributing to the increasing risk of desertification in Europe. It addresses how climate and its variability influences the surface conditions and how the changes, in turn, affect the atmosphere and feedback into the climate system. Long-term changes in the distribution of deserts are therefore considered in the context of the variability of the atmospheric circulation system. Classification of dry climates and some analytic questions are briefly discussed.
