Abstract

In November 1985 the International Atomic Energy Agency of Vienna (IAEA) organised a technical committee meeting on lifetime predictions for the first wall and blanket structure of fusion reactors. Subsequently the IAEA organised a co-ordinated research programme on lifetime behaviour of the first wall of fusion machines, endorsed by the International Fusion Research Council. This initiative, in which European, Russian and Japanese laboratories have taken part, is aimed at comparing the results of elasto-plastic calculations performed with finite element codes used by the various laboratories and the consequent evaluation of the duration of life under fatigue made following the criteria used in the various countries. This work describes the apparatus prepared by the Joint Research Centre Ispra to simulate surface thermal loads on first wall models and prototypes and its test programme. In particular this report provides a detailed description of the experimental conditions and the results of the benchmark test pieces.
