Testing and modelling of thermal mechanical and hydrogeological properties of host rocks for deep geological disposal of radioactive wasteFunded under: FP2-RADWASTOM 4C
For the evaluation of the safety of a deep geological repository for radioactive waste, it is important to obtain adequate data on the characteristics of the geological media considered. Of primary importance are data on the thermal, hydrogeological and mechanical (THM) properties of the host rocks. In order to review the state of the art, a workshop was organised by the European Commission and the proceedings of that workshop are presented in this report. Three sessions dealt with experimental and modelling work on THM properties of clays, crystalline rocks, and saliferous formations. In the final session, recommendations were presented for further work to obtain data to be used for site characterisation, repository design, construction, and performance assessment.
