This document reports on research activity developed at OTO HELARA with the aim of exploring the possibility of using an explosive technique for cutting large steel pieces for the decommissioning of nuclear installations. The following considerations resulted from the studies: (i) with small targets it is possible to exploit the fracture phenomenum (ii) with large targets a more powerful charge is required. The results obtained show that the explosive technique can be utilised as a practical method for cutting small metallic components in the course of decommissioning of nuclear installations only if the quantity of explosive per unit length of charge can be minimised.
