Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The aim of this series of projects was to develop statistical-empirical models for the main annual and perennial crops of the twelve member states of the Community to enable yields to be predicted in relation both to overall trend and climatic conditions. This publication presents available data and ways of checking its accuracy. It describes the general trend and the modelling of climatic effects and presents conclusions from a variety of complementary studies. In terms of methodology it is essential to retain complete separation between adjustment and validation of models in situations characterised by a large number of explicator variables. In practical terms, it seems that forecasts can be made with the aid of simple quadratic models based only on general trends and with stepwise adjustment.
