Abstract

This paper reconsiders the derivation of symplectic integrators by decomposing all the elements needed for their construction. By working directly on the Lie algebra of phase space co-ordinates, a new method has been defined. The procedure shows how the elementary process involved in the construction of an integrator is used to define canonical transformation. An optimum symplectic integrator is selected out of a family of integrators. The paper explains the procedures for obtaining high order integrators.
