Abstract

The largest world-wide collection of monitoring data on the performance of photovoltaic systems in the field has been gathered under the PV Demonstration and THERMIE programmes. Analysis of the data has lead to increased understanding of the performance that can be expected for various systems and components; these results are summarised. The paper also gives preliminary results from a survey of rural electrification projects which have been operating for a number of years. Questions addressed include the long-term performance and reliability of systems, the lifetime of components, especially batteries, and the evolution of loads over time. Because this paper concentrates on experience with isolated rural systems it is particularly relevant to the performance of PV systems in developing countries.
