Abstract

The aim of this project was to evaluate the use of a traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS) in heavily trafficked airspace, with particular attention to the possible occurrence of a domino effect and to the scope for applying fuzzy logic to such a system. By use of integrated man-machine simulation, two numerical models of the TCAS were developed, one based on the threshold logic currently used, the other on fuzzy logic, which were then integrated into a simulation environment focused mainly on analysis of flight procedures. The models were validated using verifiable potential collision situations arising during the landing procedure at Milan's Malpensa Airport. The results obtained show that evasive manoeuvres indicated by the TCAS enable correct separation to be restored without causing a domino effect and that the behaviour of both systems is very similar.
