Crack propagation in clay elements determined by ESPI method
On the basis of previous calibration tests, this paper describes the application of the ESPI method to determine the crack tip position and the strain field surrounding the crack that propagates in a specimen of clay material. The high sensitivity of the applied interferometric method in determining the displacements of one point produces results with an accuracy higher than with traditional techniques. For the clay specimens, the toughness parameters are obtained from a three-point bending test, and the interferometric techniques allow the determination of a complete map of displacements as a function of both time and crack propagation.
