The effect of the niobium addition by ion implantation on the corrosion behaviour of a gamms-TiAl based intermetallic alloy Ti-48Al-2Cr in air at 800 C has been studied. Comparison is made with a material in which the niobium was added by alloying. Addition of niobium to the alloy appears to improve significantly the oxidation resistance in both isothermal and cyclic oxidation tests. Possible mechanisms for the effect of niobium on the oxidation resistance of TiAl based intermetallics are discussed in view of the results obtained for the implanted material.
