The efforts of some 29 AVHRR receiving stations, co-ordinated by the United States' Geological Survey's EROS Data Center, have collected more than 4.4 terabytes of 1 km resolution AVHRR data. A 1 km global land cover data set is being created from this, based on the scientific requirements of the IGBP Core Projects. The IGBP-DIS' Land Cover Working Group (LCWG) has identified a legend of 17 classes ranging from neutral vegetation to developed land and non-vegetated classes. This paper reviews the issues and methods leading to the creation of the global 1 km land cover product, and reports on the project's current status.
