The possibilities of supplying intercalibration standards for several accelerator-based analytical techniques are explored. Different types of calibration needs are discussed and the necessary material properties of intercalibration standards are derived. This is done for the following calibration fields of ion beam analytical (IBA) techniques: (i) basic instrumental parameters for RBS and PIXE analysis; (ii) analytical accuracy of PIXE with real-life samples; (iii) determination of light elements with nuclear reaction analysis (NRA); (iv) depth profile determinations. Materials already available are discussed in terms of their applicability in intercalibration exercises. In fields where standards have yet to be produced, their necessary characteristics are delineated.
