Abstract

A detailed analysis has been carried out of fission fragment distributions and the respective momenta as a function of the excitation energy of the compound nucleus The yield distribution neither as a function of the fragment mass nor as a function of the total kinetic energy (TKE) could be clearly connected to changes in the mean TKE observed for different excitation energies. The consideration of multi-modal fission offers an improved possibility for the description of the fragment distributions. Theoretical calculations on the basis of the multi-modal random-neck rupture model of Brosa, Großmann and Müller have been completed for the compound system 238Np, predicting the existence of four independent fission modes in the mass-energy distribution.
