This extract describes the current state of the art in the use of parallel computing in remote sensing. It reviews data volumes and processing needs in remote sensing and examines issues associated with the effective exploitation of parallel hardware in typical remote sensing data processing chains. Topics include machine architecture and data mapping, including image partitioning, and techniques for parallelising algorithms. It reviews experience to date and examines some promising developments for the future.
