Microbial recolonisation of the ecosystem of the Lake of Orta after liming
In 1989 measures were initiated to restore the Lake of Orta, polluted by industry since 1926. Normalisation of water pH and a partial chemical and biological restoration represent the first signs of recovery following addition of calcium and carbonate (liming). The purpose of this research project was to identify bacteria present in water and sediment samples, especially those playing a part in the nitrogen cycle. Efforts were also focused on identification of fungi and yeasts and of bacteria harmful to fish and humans. A process of gradual bacteria stabilisation appears to have started, which should lead to improvement in the limnological characteristic of the lake's entire ecosystem.
