This paper describes a study of fibre coatings used to modify the fibre matrix bond and change the mechanical behaviour of a C/Si(3)N(4) composite. Flexural testing and microstructural TEM analysis were used to compare the effect of the various fibre coatings. The results showed that fibre surface, pyrolytic carbon and SiC coatings are well bonded to the silicon nitride matrix. Debonding at the interface occurs in the carbon fibre for composites reinforced with uncoated and SiC coated fibres, and in the pyrolytic carbon when a graphite layer is applied to the fibres.
