Chemical reactions of iodine species in aqueous systems have been studied, with and without gamma radiation, under the temperature conditions likely to be expected in the containment system of LWRs under severe accident conditions. Equilibrium and kinetic parameters from literature have been critically evaluated. A kinetic model to analyse iodine chemistry in the aqueous phase has been developed. The model includes the transport of volatile species to the gaseous phase, the retention of molecular iodine by surfaces and the formation of methyl iodine from the interaction between iodine and the submerged surfaces in the presence of radiation. FACSIMILE has been used as the solver. The model has been tested against the ACE/RTF1 and 2 experiments. The results are reasonable concerning the test without radiation, but they differ considerably for the case under irradiation. The main cause of uncertainty is considered to be the poor understanding of organic iodine chemistry.
