Abstract

The report analyses with the MELCOR code a SBO (Station Blackout Sequence) in the Garona plant, a GE-BWR in Mark 1 containment and 1381 Mwt. Four sensitivity cases are considered covering the normal operation of the overpressure protection system with and without a stuck open safety-relief valve and the operation or failure of the high pressure safety injection system, depending on the availability of direct current during six hours. The results show the retardation effects of the injection system on the initiation of the core degradation process, and the higher temperatures and corresponding higher release fractions in the low pressure scenarios. The report also analyses the main aspects of the selected sequence as viewed from the Phebus-FP experimental matrix. The higher content of zircalloy and corresponding hydrogen production per unit power, the high retention capabilities of the steam water-separators and dryers and the pool scrubbing effects are specifically addressed and evaluated.
