Evaluation of the inspection results of the safe-end areas of the PISC III assembly no. 24
Assembly no. 24 was a precise copy of a real nozzle and safe-end of the Caorso (Italy) BWR pressure vessel. The flaws introduced in the safe-end area included semi-elliptical flaws with sharp crack edges and smooth surfaces, introduced by particular machining or as implants containing these flaws. The evaluation of the techniques used to detect these flaws showed that some techniques are capable of high detection but that the overall performance given by a full procedure is generally not obtained by a simple technique.
