Abstract

Assembly no. 25 simulates a safe-end area of a PWR primary circuit. It was designed to contain significant service-induced flaws and was made of clean material. It was inspected with typical ultrasonic techniques from the outside and with radiographic techniques on the inside. The results lead to the following observations: (i) a large spread in flaw sizing is reported in the assembly; (ii) the detection performance is generally high but the correct sentencing of flaws does not reach the same level; (iii) no wider spread of results seems to exist for the dissimilar metal weld; (iv) there is a general difficulty of detection and evaluation of flaws in the fused material.
