Evaluation of the sample preparation method of the European Community method concerning analysis of biphenyl in citrus fruit peels
The European Community sample preparation method for analysis of biphenyl in peels of citrus fruits is evaluated concerning its efficiency in extraction and recovery rates. Regarding the extraction of biphenyl, it can be seen that ten minutes refluxing in dichloromethane, are not sufficient. Only 85-90% of biphenyls were found. For further analysis of the biphenyl content in peels of citrus fruits, the sample preparation method requires concentrating of the extract under reduced pressure and applying a water bath temperature of 60 C. Investigations about the loss of the volatile biphenyl by evaporation under these conditions have shown that at least 6-18% of the extracted biphenyl can be lost.
