Using a geographic information system for management and analysis of a European earthquake catalogue
The JRC have installed a catalogue on a GIS for the management and analysis of European earthquakes. The possibilities provided by the GIS for selecting and displaying seismic events according to position, time, intensity or other database attributes are shown to be highly useful for those working with this type of data. The GIS facilities also provide useful ways for investigating some of the acknowledged weaknesses of the present catalogue with respect to duplications of events and homogeneity across countries. Furthermore the possibility of using the multimedia approach to retain links to historical records, by including scanned photographs and text in the database, has been shown to be feasible and practical for future improved catalogues. The possibilities for spatial analysis have been illustrated by examining earthquake events in the Iberian Peninsular in relation to population density and locations of nuclear installations.
