Cross section of the nitrogen-14(alpha, p(0))oxygen-17 nuclear reaction for analytical applications
The cross section (cs) of the nitrogen-14(alpha, p(0))oxygen-17 reaction for nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) applications was measured for alpha-particles energies between 4 and 5 MeV and a laboratory scattering angle of 135 degrees at the 7 MV Van de Graaff accelerator by irradiation of polyimide (kapton) foils. Absolute cs-values were derived by normalizing the proton yields on the edge yields of the simultaneously measured Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) spectra of the alpha-projectiles on the tantalum backings of the polyimide samples. The cs-errors are less than 10%.
