The operation of the future on-site laboratory (OSL) at Sellafield will have to rely on quality control measures and all plutonium oxide samples will be measured by a neutron-gamma counter (OSL-counter) which combines the technique of passive neutron-coincidence counting and high-resolution gamma spectrometry.

A batch of plutonium oxide with isotopic characteristics close to those expected in material in the OSL was prepared and certified, and used for calibrating the OSL-counter. The paper presents the verification and the evaluation of the precision and the accuracy of the different analytical techniques applied for the plutonium element assay and isotopic abundance determinations. .
