Creep damage determination by non-destructive techniques and quantitative metallography
Ultrasonic techniques (US) and electrical resistivity (RE) measurements were applied to determine the creep damage in 3 austenitic stainless steels having different creep characteristics. In addition, the specimens were investigated metallographically. In this case the A-parameter was used to quantify the damage. The results of the US and RE measurements and their comparison to the metallographic examination show that both techniques may be used for creep damage characterization in all 3 materials despite the different mechanisms of damage formation observed. There is a closer agreement between the RE measurements and the A-parameter than between the US measurements and the A-parameter.
