Abstract

Modelling and experimental work has been initiated for the assessment of the energy efficiency impact of photovoltaic (PV) device integration on building facades. The building has been fitted with 770 m{2} of amorphous PV devices, giving a rated power output of about 30 kW. Aspects investigated include electrical performance, the improved heat loss coefficient of the component and the thermal recovery from the ventilated air in the cavity between the PV device and wall. The particular situation has been created of 30 chimneys, height 12 m, length 1.6 m and width 0.23 m which could serve for heating in the winter period and deliver the driving force for cooling in the summer season. The study could provide information for retrofitting of large scale buildings offering the advantages of the PV devices.
