Abstract

At the 7 MV Van de Graaff accelerator of the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM) a programme of analytical techniques based on nuclear reactions: Nuclear Reaction Analysis (NRA) and Nuclear Resonant Reaction Analysis (NRRA); and scattering: Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (ERDA) of deuteron, helium and nitrogen projectiles with light elements (H, B, C, N, O) was started few years ago. The Prompt Charge Particle Activation Analysis (PCPAA) was developed at IRMM for the characterization of boron and carbon nitride coatings (BN, C(3)N(4)) with (alpha,p) and (d,p) reactions (NRA). Two techniques are currently under installation for hydrogen profiling. The one based on the resonant reaction H-1(N-15, alpha gamma)C-12 and measuring the emitted gamma rays has a high depth resolution, the other using the elastic scattering of helium ions on hydrogen H(He-4 He-4)H and measuring the recoiling hydrogen has a high sensitivity and detects all three hydrogen isotopes. Results from the analysis of boron, nitrogen and hydrogen by the application of the above techniques are presented in this paper.
