Abstract

This paper discusses the programme undertaken by France and Germany on the design of a new generation of Light Water Reactors. EPR, capable of containing the consequences of a core melt-down accident, in absence of pressure in the primary circuit, with limited consequences in space and time regarding the fission product source term. The objective of the international PHEBUS FP programme is to investigate in integral in-pile experiments, on a reduced scale, severe accident phenomena such as core degradation and the subsequent behaviour of the released fission products. Core degradation is conducted up to the rather advanced stage of molten pool formation. Future tests are also discussed. Facility and test conduct are not discussed here but relevant publications are given.
