FIRS project: statistical and mapped forest information from remote sensing
This paper outlines the Firs (Forest Information from Remote Sensing) Project, a research and development project aimed at contributing to the provision of both statistical and mapped information on European forest areas. Sectorial (production-related) and environmental aspects of forests are addressed. To support the thematic parts of the project 3 foundation actions have been defined: regionalization and stratification of European forest ecosystems has been followed by a study to develop and define a remote sensing related forest nomenclature and a study to collect geo-referenced forest data from test areas which have been selected to represent the major European forest ecosystem types. Results to date are presented . Currently, the project is concentrating on the provision of European forest area maps and on the development of an automatic change detection system for the provision of both statistics and geo-referenced information.
