The Europeans try the cone calorimeter for evaluating the fire safety of furniture
This publication discusses the Commission of the European Community draft directive on fire behaviour of upholstered furniture. To promote the development of a relevant evaluation method, the European Commission has funded a research programme called CBUF (combustion behaviour of upholstered furniture) with the objective of providing scientific and technical support for performance requirements. The main objective of the CBUF project is to develop means of evaluating upholstered furniture in full scale as well as in small scale. Eleven laboratories from 8 counties participate in the project, which is expected to be completed during the first half of 1995. Principals have been developed to test and evaluate components, fabrics and cushion materials, separately or in combinations thereof (composites). The results are presented here.
