The effects of water interaction with UO(2) single crystals (leaching) were studied by means of 7.53 MeV(4) He-ion channelling. Upon leaching at temperatures above 150 C transformation of the surface layer into a higher oxide, most probably U(3)O(7), was observed. The lattice mismatch between the bulk crystal and the transformed layer produced important changes in the 110 axial channelling direction. Basing on these data and Monte Carlo channeling simulations a model structure of the transformed layer was developed.
