Abstract

The paper reports on the results of a study and questionnaire survey to assess expected technological developments in the field of carbon dioxide storage and disposal technologies, and the evolution of their key technoeconomic characteristics towards the year 2020 and beyond. In this study, different options for disposal into the ocean, involving injection at various depths or dumping from the surface were reviewed. Injection of CO(2) in terrestrial or submarine aquifers and depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs were also looked at, taking into consideration, in the latter case, the possible subsidiary benefits in terms of enhanced oil recovery. Also, the status of technologies for on shore and off shore CO(2) transportation were examined. This paper essentially summarises the information provided on the possible evolution of these technologies and on the prospects and timing for their commercial availability.
