An iterative strategy for source term work within the European Union has been defined on the basis of successive periods of assessments, experimental and code modelling work. Although practical considerations result in departures from the strict application of this strategy, it is a sound framework within which research and development study can be based. Assessments included sensitivity studies using appropriate plant calculations, comparisions with integral experiments and supporting reviews. The objective of this work was to produce a sound calculational route with quantified uncertanties which could be used with confidence to determine the consequences of severe reactor accidents and to assist in defining and evaluating accident management procedures.
