Abstract

An experimental tracer release campaign took place in the Ticino river valley, Switzerland, aimed at understanding the air mass exchanges across the Alps. This exercise was the second of a number of experiments in which simple valley breeze and subsequent drainage flow conditions were selected in a single valley. An extended meterological network was det up during the campaign. A part from the synoptic observations, meteorological data were gathered using a number of supplementary ground stations and a sonic anemometer. Temperature profiles are available, and wind and turbulence profiles are available through 3 Doppler acoustic sounders. An aircraft and a motor glider produced consistent information on the wind, temperature and humidity structure of the atmosphere above the area of the experiment.
