A Decision Support System for the Management of the Clean up of a Large River Basin Using an Expert System Approach : Results from a Pilot Implementation for the Italian Po Valley
The project described in the present report, concerns the development of a combined decision support system (DSS) and expert system (ES) to assist in the management, planning and control of the cleaning up activities of the large basin of the River Po in northern Italy. The system aims at giving scientific support to decision makers by evaluating alternative plans and strategies, and assisting them in their choices among several possibilities. The alternative plans are characterized by their costs, effectiveness, environmental impacts, and social impacts, implying that the decisions are based on multiple criteria. The prototype system is implemented on a workstation together with a geographical information system (GIS) which contains the information necessary for the evaluation of different measures for reducing pollution in the river basin. In addition to have access to these informations, the system contains modules for the construction of scenarios, simulation of environmental impacts, multiobjective decision making, and an interactive user interface.
