Abstract

The purpose of this work is to contribute to the creation of a common knowledge base at the disposal of all the decision makers at Community, national and regional levels concerned with the electrification of high speed trains in Europe. As a result of technical evolution there are 5 different systems of electrification in use at present, with at least 7 control, command and signalling systems.
This report considers the technical and economic factors governing decisions, and the argument for change and harmonization against the concern over costs of conversion, depreciation of existing infrastructures and disruption to traffic during only changes.
