  • The future of industry in Europe : Volume 8 - European industries at the watershed : Deficits and prospects of selected European industries, synthesis of the FINE industries network : Volume 9 - SMEs at the crossroads? Scenarios on the futu

This publication contains volumes eight and nine of the Future of Industry in Europe series. Volume eight synthesises different reports prepared within the industries network. It focuses on the relevance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) for European industrial development, and analyses their ability to respond to foreseeable changes and challenges. Volume nine is divided into three sections. The first section provides an overview of SMEs in European economies. The second section reviews some of the explanations put forward for the re-emergence of the small firm. Five distinct constellations of SMEs are isolated and analysed: market localists, craft-based, SMEs within regional networks, high tech options for SMEs, and SMEs in the new division of labour between firms. The third section presents two possible paths of development for SMEs and discusses the reality of small firms in Europe.
