Abstract

This publication contains volumes ten and eleven of the Future of Industry in Europe series. Volume ten studies the situation where mechanical engineering provides the means of production for other sectors as well as for its own production processes. A specific environment-related view on major agents and their interactions is taken as a means of understanding the links between social needs and problems and their impact on future developments of mechanical engineering. Volume eleven examines the future of the European car industry. The first part discusses factors influencing total demand for cars and alternative ways of producing mobility. The second part is concerned with technological change and product innovation, and discusses new features that may be installed in future vehicles. In part three, attention moves from product innovation to process innovation and internal organisation. Part four considers various aspects of industrial organisation including trade and competition, the structure of the industry and industrial relations.
